In March/April 1997 I had an assignment to cover the the shooting of the movie “When the light comes” with Francesca van Thielen and Joachim Król on Spitsbergen (Svalbard). While the crew was shooting, I had the opportunity to make a little story on the miners`community Barentsburg.
Although Svalbard is under Norwegian sovereignty, the unique Svalbard Treaty of 1920 allows citizens of signatory countries equal rights to exploit natural resources. Russia, along with Norway, maintain mining operations on Svalbard as a result. Russia maintains a consulate in Barentsburg, the northern- most diplomatic mission of any kind in the world.
